FILLED: Production director

To support our ongoing growth, Sewtec is seeking a production director in Yorkshire to join our bespoke automation solutions company.

Reporting directly into our managing director, the purpose of the role is to assume responsibility for manufacturing, purchasing, build and quality control related to the supply of bespoke industrial automation systems. To emphasise the experience required, Sewtec’s systems are all low-volume, unique and designed to customer requirements rather than standard high-volume catalogue products.

The management of our manufacturing output will be high on your agenda. You’ll be tasked with overseeing and planning internal manufacturing of parts including CNC machining, turning, manual machining and fabrication.
As well as this, you’ll manage the external manufacturing of parts and subassemblies which includes suppliers based in the UK, Europe and Asia. Our production director will also provide estimations for the manufacturing costs of parts to contribute to our make/buy decisions.

You’ll also have control over all of Sewtec’s purchasing activities including supplier assessments and approvals, competitive tendering, definition of commercial terms, price comparisons, negotiations, delivery timescale management and quality control.
As production director, your to-do list will include the management of goods in/out and stores, as well as involving the assembly of mechanical and electrical parts and subassemblies into a bespoke automation system. Overseeing the quality control for all manufactured and purchased items and services, and the completed system build, will also be your responsibility.

Interacting with customers during project deliveries in support of securing new business and enabling internal staff development will be under your remit. You’ll also contribute to the definition of the business strategy, preparation of business plans and budgets, and attendance of regular management and board meetings.

To support the production director, Sewtec has identified the following subordinate roles which are either in place or being actively recruited for, such as head of manufacturing, head of purchasing, head of build and head of quality.

We’re looking for a production director who has previous experience of managing the manufacture and build of multiple bespoke automation systems in a project environment. You’ll have extensive experience of working with engineering and project management departments, as well as managing teams through subordinates. Previous experience as a company director is highly desirable.

Just like the rest of the Sewtec team, you’ll need excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to communicate at all levels and across a number of teams – including customers, suppliers and Sewtec staff. Operating in an agile environment, you’ll need to be able to work well under pressure too.
